Prayer for Power

A Prayer for the Ephesians

Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Imagine this—you are a Christian missionary and you have traveled to parts of the world where Jesus Christ is unknown.  You have labored to bring the gospel to a group of people. They accepted your message just like the deer that is thirsty almost to death and when he finds cool, refreshing water from the stream he laps it up with enthusiasm.  You have been imprisoned for your efforts but learn that the church you started has been under attack from false preachers, black magic, division, yet the church has remained strong.

The scenario above is the background for the book of Ephesians, one of the Pauline epistles written while Paul was in prison.  Paul loved all new churches, but he had a particular fondness for the churches he began.  The church at Ephesus was started during Paul’s third missionary journey and he wanted to give them the encouragement they needed to remain strong in the faith.

During the first two chapters of Ephesians Paul reminds them of the mystery of Jesus Christ which has been made available to the Gentiles, this mystery being that we are all saved by grace.  He finishes his letter with this prayer, and what a great prayer it is.  Paul makes sure the Ephesians understands that they are now a part of God’s family, and they have access to power through the Holy Spirit who has set up a dwelling place within their hearts. Paul prays that the people at Ephesus are filled with the fullness of God—His love, His grace, His mercy, and His power.

If you are feeling less than secure about your relationship with God, pray this prayer for yourself, your family, your church and your community.  The power of God’s Holy Spirit is available for all Christians.  All we must do is plug in through prayer, Bible reading, community (attending a Bible-believing church) and we will begin to see our faith increase and our resolve strengthened.

PRAYER: Precious Father, thank you for people like Paul who gave everything for the gospel.  Thank you that your grace is meant for all who will hear and respond.  May we be empowered today and every day by your Word, your Spirit, and your love. Amen

Be Still

As a child, I was told on more than one occasion to “be still.”  Later, as a mother, I admonished my son to “be still.”  And now, as I read the Scriptures, I am cautioned once again to, “be still.”

Being still is something we do not do very well.  As children, we simply have too much energy to be still for very long.  As adults, there is a distinct lack of comfort in being still.  We believe we are missing something if we are not on the move, when in fact we are in danger of missing the most important thing if we fail to be still, and that is communion with God.

David understood how to be still and connect with his God. From the highs to the lows, from castles to caves, David learned to seek God where He could be found.  David knew that God was his shepherd, and David understood both what it meant to be a shepherd, and what it meant to be shepherded.

Have you learned to be still before the Lord, waiting on Him and allowing Him to restore your soul?  Be still, and know that He is God, and He is holy, holy, holy.

Prayer:  Dear Father, I have too often rushed headlong into plans and schemes and instead of asking for your direction, hoped you would bless my efforts because I am your child.  Forgive me for my impatience and for failing to wait on you.  May I learn what it means to be still before you.  Amen

I will sing your praise, O God

Psalm 138 New International Version 1984 (NIV1984) Psalm 138 Of David. 1 I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; before the gods I will sing your praise. 2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

Just as The Lord’s Prayer teaches us to pray, these few scriptures could be the guideline for the beginning of every word spoken in prayer. How can I say anything more appropriate and more meaningful than what David says in this psalm?

When we praise God if it is not with our whole heart, then what purpose does such praise serve? When we sing of God, if we do not sing His praise before the entire world, are our songs not hollow? We must learn that God requires nothing less than the fullness of our love and devotion toward Him. Will you bow down your knees with me before the throne of the Almighty God and praise Him for Who He is?

PRAYER: Precious Father, help us to know, really know, what it means to praise you with our whole hearts. You are worthy of all praise and honor and we pray that we, your children, would learn how to give you the praise you so deserve. Amen.

This is the day the Lord has made

Let us rejoice and be glad.

My computer is at the doc’s for a check-up, and because I am not proficient at writing on my iPhone today’s message will be brief.

A friend told me about a book by Janet Pope called “His Word in my Heart”. Janet Pope has memorized more than 90 books of the Bible and I have been inspired to begin committing God’s Word in my heart. I just started yesterday with Psalm 1.

I am reminded of a funeral I attended last year. The woman suffered from dementia the last years of her life, and though she could not remember how to brush her teeth she still quoted Scripture.

I want to be that kind of woman. Won’t you join me and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
Prayer:Father, we are so thankful for your Word that both forms and informs us. Help us, dear God, to store your Word in our hearts that we might be better disciples. Amen.

Psalm 27

Psalm 27

Of David.

The Lord is my light and my salvation)
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
    of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked advance against me
    to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident.

One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.

What type of lights have you used in your lifetime?  As a child, we had overhead lights that were activated by pulling a string or a chain.  I despised those lights, because the string would sometimes break leaving you in darkness, and I was afraid of the dark!  Some of our lights had switches on the walls, and those were fine once I reached the height to use them.  I have used candles when the power went off, and flashlights for finding my way outside in the dark.  But the most precious light I have found in my life has been the light that the Holy Scriptures shed upon my life.

I love Psalm 27 where we are told that the Lord is our light and our salvation, whom shall we fear.  He is the stronghold of our lives, of whom shall we be afraid?  When we make our dwelling place with the Lord, when we abide in Him, there is no place for fear or anger or despair. 

The song “It is Well with my Soul” could well be the accompaniment to this psalm, for it assures us that whatever happens in life, if we have Jesus as our Savior, it is well with our soul.

Is it well with your soul today?  Has the Holy Scripture been a lamp unto your feet and light unto your path?  Has Jesus become your light and your salvation?

Today is truly the day the Lord has made.  Come to Jesus today and allow Him to become your light, your stronghold, your safe place.

Prayer:  Our Father, today we come to you confident that you love us and you want to protect us.  May we abide with you now and forever.  Amen
