Can you still hear His voice?

Psalm 95:5-8
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
7 for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,

as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,

My parents both died in the early ‘70s. While I can still remember their images, partly I am sure because of pictures, I can no longer remember the sound of their voices. It has been so long since I heard them speak, that the tenor of the voice and the pattern of their speech has disappeared from my memory.
Part of seeking holiness is in understanding who God is and why He is worthy of our worship. In just one brief sentence we see the larger scope of who God is—the Creator of all, and thus the Owner of all. Because of all He has done and continues to do we worship Him. We recognize Him as our Great Shepherd.
And here is the key—Jesus talked in John 10:14 about the sheep following the Shepherd because they know the sound of His voice. We can only know the sound of a person’s voice if we spend time with that person. We can only follow Him if we allow our hearts to be softened and allow our minds to become pliable and open to something other than our own dogmas.
Do you see God as being multifaceted in His being and His relationship with us? Or do you restrict Him to only the Creator, or only a God of love, or only a God of vengeance, or only a God of the past, no longer relevant in our current time? Can you still recognize the sound of His voice, or have you been away from Him for far too long?
PRAYER: Most gracious God, in our search for holiness may we be made aware of who you are. May we become disciplined in our approach to You, and may we truly see You for who you are, and hear and follow your voice. May we remain faithful to you so that we will never forget the sound of your voice. Amen
