Power through Love


Ephesians 3:16-20

New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Notice how many times the word “power” is used in the above scriptures.  In the last few years, we have seen a plethora of movies about superheroes. 

  1. Ironman 1 and 2
  2. Captain America
  3. Thor
  4. The Avengers (a movie featuring all of the above)

 Why the interest in these fictional characters?  I do not believe the increase in these movies is just a matter of escapism, but instead represents an underlying search for hope.

 The economy throughout the world is in dire straits.  Job losses continue to grow and new housing starts continue to shrink.  People are seeing their retirement accounts dwindle.  We feel a loss of power, a lack of control over our own destinies.

One would think that disciples of Jesus, while not immune from the world’s economic woes, would at least know where to turn to find real strength and power in our lives.  But do we?

Intentional disciples have a resource through which they can access unlimited power and strength, a resource that establishes us in the love of Jesus Christ so that we may share that love with others. 

 Economies rise and fall, but the love of Christ will not pass away. 

 Prayer:  Father God, if we are not already rooted in your love, then I pray that those roots will begin to form and go deep into the soil of your Spirit, and that your love will increase in us so that we may share that love with all we meet.  Amen
