He Brought Me Out
Psalms 40:2-10 (ASV) 2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay;
And he set my feet upon a rock and established my goings.
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God:
Many shall see it, and fear,
And shall trust in Jehovah.
4 Blessed is the man that maketh Jehovah his trust,
And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5 Many, O Jehovah my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done,
And thy thoughts which are to us-ward:
They cannot be set in order unto thee;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered.
6 Sacrifice and offering thou hast no delight in;
Mine ears hast thou opened:
Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.
7 Then said I, Lo, I am come;
In the roll of the book it is written of me:
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God;
Yea, thy law is within my heart.
9 I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly;
Lo, I will not refrain my lips,
O Jehovah, thou knowest.
10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart;
I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation;
I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great assembly.
Psalms 107:13-15 (NRSV) 13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress;
14 he brought them out of darkness and gloom,
and broke their bonds asunder.
15 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
Isn’t it odd how life takes its twists and turns? We plan, we save our money, we try to do the right things, yet the control we have over our own circumstances is sometimes tenuous at best.
David was well aware of the difficulties life throws our way. He knew where to turn when he was in despair, and he knew how to reach God in prayer. If we can learn nothing else, we must gain the understanding that God is our very present help in time of need—in good times and in troubled times we should praise the Lord.
What does praise in the time of discouragement accomplish? First, we take our focus off ourselves and turn it to God. There are no circumstances so great that God is overwhelmed. Secondly, when we praise God even in times of trouble, we are declaring our faith for all to see. What a great witness to sing with true joy even in the storm. Finally, we are lifted up by the mighty hand of God.
I am closing today with another hymn of the church.
He Brought Me Out
4. I’ll sing of His wonderful mercy to me,
I’ll praise Him till all men His goodness shall see;
I’ll sing of salvation at home and abroad,
Till many shall hear the truth and trust in God.
Refrain:
He brought me out of the miry clay,
He set my feet on the Rock to stay;
He puts a song in my soul today,
A song of praise, hallelujah!
May we share today the deliverance of God, giving hope to the hopeless and peace to the those in conflict.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
